WINDOWS FOR CONSERVATION AREAS

DOUBLE GLAZED UNITS & PERIOD FEATURES

Wooden window with double glazing in period property

Merrin Joinery design, manufacture and install wooden windows for properties in conservation areas.

We make bespoke timber windows and doors which match the architectural details of the originals, but with double-glazed units where this is acceptable to your conservation officer.

There are various options including narrow plant-on glazing bars and slim-line double-glazed units. These help to maintain the look of the original windows, whilst giving you the benefit of modern double glazing.

Windows are an important feature in historic buildings, as they significantly contribute to the character of buildings. If your house is in a conservation area with an Article 4 Direction (which restricts work you can normally do without planning permission) you are likely to require consent to make any alterations to windows.

When windows need to be replaced in an historic building, there is usually some disparity between Building Conservation Requirements and the Building Regulation Rules. For each individual job, the decision regarding the balance of these two types of regulation will need to be agreed by your local conservation officer and your local building control department.

Merrin Joinery can supply you with a detailed specification and drawings, to make this process easier.
